Evolution of the American Dream

Jul 25, 2010 | Comments

When I was growing up the American Dream for a girl was to live like a Barbie doll with Ken and Skipper, an enormous wardrobe, travel trailer and VW bug with peace signs on it. I have failed miserably - I only have the wardrobe, though I did mange to have a lime green VW bug convertible in Mexico but it got totaled by a cement truck.

The Mega Gap Between Industry and the Workforce

Jul 05, 2010 | Comments

The third wave of the Internet’s development: mobile broadband is upon us. Revealed at a June 28 presentation to the New America Foundation, was the President's Spectrum Initiative. This isn't about a secret order like the Illuminati - it's about job creation for which as a workforce we are not prepared...

If we want our children to grow up to have more, do better, suffer less and achieve interesting, family sustaining, stable careers with potential for growth to provide for the good things in life – we have to provide them with guidance and career development from early on. Currently - we don't.

A 1099 Workforce is Emerging

A seventh century Anglo Saxon “Oath of Fealty" states “By the Lord before whom this sanctuary is holy, I will to N. be true and faithful, and love all which he loves and shun all which he shuns, according to the laws of God and the order of the world. Nor will I ever with will or action, through word or deed, do anything which is unpleasing to him, on condition that he will hold to me as I shall deserve it, and that he will perform everything as it was in our agreement when I submitted myself to him and chose his will.” - Today we call this employment.

Focus On Retention Not Dropout Re-engagement

The more I think about it the more I am convinced that the management principles of education and employment should be strategically aligned. From the LMS to motivation, acknowledgment of learning styles to flexibility and accountability to disciplinary action, school is preparation for the rest of life which is in large part WORK so what's the deal? Why is it so different and wouldn't a more seamless approach to the transition out into the real world be a heck of a lot better?

The Job Fair and the Loch Ness Monster

Apr 17, 2010 | Comments

Is it that our fair citizenry, lost in the art of the job search, needs education to help gain employment because the landscape shifted under their feet since last time they looked? Have we made job search akin to searching for the Loch Ness Monster because we have complicated it with our newfangled ways? I went to teach, instead I learned.....

Do Temps Get the Shaft?

Feb 14, 2010 | Comments

Are temporary workers as valuable as regular ones? Should they be treated as well as regular ones? Is there a stigma attached with being a "temp"? Maybe here is something deeper going on than meets the eye. Maybe part of it is what is going on internally when you don't want to be a "temp" you want to be a "regular".

We Can Haz Equal Pay

I read a comment by someone on Lipstick Discussions on ere community that women aren't complacent or submissive, we just grew weary of the fight in a world where testosterone rules. It's been 19 years since a government commission set out to investigate the theory of a glass ceiling and 15 years since they came back with a thick report saying what we all knew to be true. Why don't they put rocket scientists in charge? After all, they can put men and women on the moon.,..

You Be The Judge

Jan 12, 2010 | Comments

Who wouldn't understand feeling leery of hiring a person who did jail time? All kinds of things cross your mind and you might be questioning trust, ethic and responsibility. Maybe you prefer to not open a potential can of worms... But, how fair is it to be a person that has fulfilled a debt to society only to remain barred from meaningful reintegration and forced to carry around a stigma they can't shake?

When the Student Becomes the Teacher

"This is a practice email so I can see if it really works and I don't bother anyone else. So far I have only sent them to my husband's computer.... I want to see if they work here." - Senior Aid learning to use technology
