What happens when you get candidates, recruiters and employers in on the same conversation? Paul Paris, Founder and CEO of recruiterreqs.com debuts his new show The Ex-Recruiter on BlogTalkRadio to have candid discussions about the job market, employer expectations, the job search and the recruiting industry. Don't miss it!

Paul Paris, Founder & CEO of Recruiterreqs.com Inc. is interested in talking about employment issues facing people in their everyday lives from the perspective of recruiters, candidates and employers. Just a few years ago it would have been difficult and costly to get these conversations in to the public light unless you had a friend in Media, PR, or Marketing. Fortunately, today’s access to new media gives Paul a vehicle to conduct, broadcast globally and record these dialogs for anyone interested in the world of employment. He’s starting a show on BlogTalkRadio.

At first thought the concept of having conversations with all the players involved seems like a simple no brainer. However, generally we’re so focused on our niche areas of expertise and professional intelligence we tend to guard industry and insider information closely and not think to invite others around the table for coffee.

But not Paul, that’s not his style. He plans to get candidates involved and talking about their job searches, recruiters about the industry and employers about their expectations. Chatting with him he said that one of his professional highlights is memories of when he was recruiting and would get a rush every time an applicant was made a job offer and accepted. He said it wasn’t just because he made money but because he had a hand in giving someone a fresh start in a position that they really wanted.

He has a lot of questions to ask, kind of reminds me of Larry King’s style. Ask questions, sit back, listen and learn. Questions like:

What has happened to full life cycle recruiting (recruiting has become like a production line)?
Why are candidates the forgotten equation in everything?
Why are people judged immediately because of what a social media profile says or what they look like?
Have Baby Boomers spoiled their Gen Y children to a point that most can’t find employment after graduation because they don’t have any prior work experience?
Is the recruiting field over-saturated?
Should recruiters be credentialed (with something other than SPHR or PHR) like used to have to be in NJ when it was mandatory for recruiters to pass a state test?

Whoa… those are some heavy questions for contemplation and discourse. I’ve been invited to be a guest on November 3rd to discuss one of today’s hottest recruiting topics, social media v.s. picking up the phone. Sounds intellectual, I like it.

When Paul started his new business he said that from day one the company pledged to give a percentage of earnings to charities helping people less fortunate and unemployed. It’s posted on the recruiterreqs.com website that they are part of the Agents Paying Forward Network. Visit the site and on the related links tab you’ll find there are a number of helpful networks for both recruiters and job seekers. I expect to see The Ex-Recruiter posted there very soon!

The Ex-Recruiter debuts live October 20 at 12:00p.m. EST with a half hour introduction. The weekly show moves to a 1 hour time slot on October 27th from 12:00p.m. to 1:00p.m. Up and coming episodes feature Candidate Uproar with guests Janice and Jeremy Worthington, Job Search Coaches, Gen Y advocate, J.T. O’Donnell and in case you didn’t catch it above, yours truly.

Good luck to Paul Paris on his new venture and be sure to call in with your questions and comments!

Forget the economy, world hunger, tsunamis, war, yada yada... it's time for Confessions from the Supply Closet and our insatiable hunger for sensationalism. Inquiring minds want to know your reproductive status and who you've slept with.

The escalating unemployment rate was overshadowed this week by David Letterman’s public confession of sex with female staffers and Penelope Trunk’s reproductive tales. It reminds me of the death of Farah Fawcett overshadowed by that of Michael Jackson.

It’s on TV right now. Staffer Stephanie’s diary is out. Long walks on the Letterman ranch as late as last fall and she was in love. The Orlando Sentinel ‘s blog just an hour ago calling it “the tweet heard ’round the world” and asking, “Do mommy bloggers reveal too much information?”

Father, father, everybody thinks we’re wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today

This post could go so many ways. Hell, I could tell you my own juicy bits… but that’s not my style. It is Penelope’s however.

She does what I call reality blogging and it’s just as sensationalistic as its visual counterpart on TV (I don’t watch reality TV either). I’ve heard she’s ditzy, I’ve heard she’s smart. One thing for sure is I certainly keep hearing about her and she certainly knows how to get attention. Whether she is a master manipulator, raw master marketer or both, she got what she wanted. There’s no doubt that she has created a rock solid personal brand by design or by accident. Either you love it or you don’t. I don’t think it’s by accident…

Guess what? It doesn’t matter what we think.

She is self employed and the professional risk she took is her baby. Yeah, if you read the tweet, her blog or the news you get the sick pun. I’m not sure if I feel sorry for her need to publicize the things she does or admire her moxie to brazenly disclose her illnesses, reproductive facts and conditions, or even know if it’s real life events or the product of her imagination she blurts out. Everyone has stuff going on with their body, family, mental state. It’s the human condition. Maybe because I get that and have my own life to deal with I don’t find it interesting to read about hers. Frankly, I think Penelope is looking to call attention to herself more than ever because she’s looking for hype about her new product.

I’m more than happy to enable her need for attention by providing the juicy links. I just don’t care. What I do care about is that she’s happy. And I don’t even know her. But if you know me you know that I want everyone to be happy including me. We live in a democracy so if she chooses to make a living by talking about her personal life, there’s a market for that kind of product and the money’s good, then good for her. We have the choice to read or not.

In 2009 there is equality in new media. Anyone can put their life online.

Picket lines and picket signs
Don’t punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
What’s going on
Ya, what’s going on
Tell me what’s going on
I’ll tell you what’s going on

I feel sorry for Stephanie for getting involved with the emotionally unstable ass of a bf who found it necessary to ruin not only his own life but make her’s, Letterman’s, Regina’s and anyone else’s involved a nightmare.

It seems every year on February 13th a ton of articles are published about workplace romance. Then every once in a while you get the odd story that has nothing to do with Valentine’s Day timing. Still and all, there is no denying that work is and will always be the #1 place to meet a romantic partner. While many are flingy in nature, some of these romances turn into marriage. According to a 2005 Office Romance Survey conducted by Vault, Inc., 58% of employees say they have been involved in an office romance.

Who do we think we are to try to prohibit the most base human instinct? I understand sexual harassment, unwanted advances AND repercussions for not complying with a boss’s wishes. Yes, I personally understand that. It’s awkward, uncomfortable and unfortunate that people sometimes do not respect one another enough to take no for an answer and have the ability to move on and maintain a professional work relationship. Hormones are tough buggers to overcome. I consider it a performance issue related to conduct. You can’t make the workplace uncomfortable for another employee, period.

Letterman has yet to have complaints against his conduct in the workplace filed against him. I don’t know the details and maybe they will be. Maybe he was coercive. Maybe one of his staffers with benefits will see the sweet seduction of money and file something hoping for ca-ching since she didn’t get the man. Maybe they won’t. Maybe they were completely consenting and he was gentlemanly and not pushy at all. Maybe he and Stephanie glanced at each other across a table one day, locked in that “look” and destiny happened innocently. Maybe any one of those relationships had an actual opportunity to be a real relationship. I simply can’t be against that kind of potential fate.

Companies would be much better off to understand human nature and create policies that deal effectively with office romances rather than try to negate them. I understand why they try — it can get messy when lovers are scorned. But it’s not realistic to think it isn’t going to happen.

The whole HR industry is furiously making new policy for Bird Flu and social media use and only 20% have a dating policy. Dating has been around for ever and social media and Bird Flu are new.

Where have we been?

According to an article by Business Management Daily, SHRM revealed that among employers that do set such policies:

64% but discourage dating between co-workers.

28% permit dating.

8% prohibit it.

I applaud the 28% that deal with it.

Here’s to peace and love, Penelope and Letterman, everyone else that has a life and the wisdom to live the one shot we have wisely. Everyone else can take a hike.

P.S. Marvin Gaye will rock for all eternity

I can't imagine tried and true brown shoe recruiting techniques will ever go away. But, what about the new tools and techniques to make work a little more efficient, comfy and fun? Like the Shat don't we need to go where no man has been? Are you doing it? What about your colleagues IRL? Are we an alien colony in the recruitersphere and how do we share what we've discovered with those back on mother Earth?

Most companies I deal with haven’t been doing much hiring lately. In fact, there’s been a hiring drought around here. So, this week when I took 4 inquiries for assistance with recruiting and leads you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. I love new beginnings and unless this was just a blip in the cosmic vortex I am hopeful for renewed karmic equilibrium of the unemployment rate.

These callers were an HR manager, a seasoned independent Recruiter, and 2 small business owners. With the exception of the seasoned Recruiter who in all fairness was doing his job turning over rocks looking for referrals, the comments were all very similar in nature.

It’s been so long since we have hired the resumes we have on hand are no good and the newspaper ad isn’t working. I can’t find the talent I need, can you help me?

I’m presenting on this very topic at THE Conference on October 6th here in Nepaland but the troops are needed now. So, I began each conversation asking for basic information and asked to be emailed job specs. Then I went down the path of breadcrumbs like Gretel did.

Do you have an employee referral program? No.

Did you ask the applicants you had on hand for referrals? No.

Have you tried non-traditional means of recruiting? What does that mean?

The one hour conference gig isn’t going to cut it. I was planning on a series of job seeker seminars to teach them how to use social media to aid in their job search but I see I have to get more involved with those responsible for hiring them first…

Are your IRL colleagues taking advantage of new recruiting techniques and practices or are they still hanging on to the tried and true and missing out on where many of today’s jobseekers are hanging out?
