A Social Media Intervention

Aug 15, 2009 / Social Media / Trackback

Monday, October 17th at 7:00P.M., I’ll be on the air at 97bht radio with Ralphie Aversa, and Mike Trim from WBRE TV. Ralphie’s show isn’t talk radio but he is a Gen Y guy who loves his social media. We’re connected on Facebook and Twitter and like me, he’s hooked up by IV™ (intensive virtuality™) and has a gazillion accounts in other places.

Anyway, last Wednesday, on the ride home from an ever so richly rewarding day at the Bat Cave, Ralphie was on the air commenting on recent stories in the news regarding companies banning the use of social media in the workplace. It was good… but it reminded me of biblical stories of the plague that killed first born sons.

Because that is how important being connected is for so many people. I can see the day when we’re all chewing Socialmediadone™ while at work to kill the craving for 8 hours because the addiction has become too strong to resist.…

@Shoefeen would be a great candidate for Clinical Trials

Where is the nearest Socialmediadone clinic?

Where is the nearest Socialmediadone™ clinic?

I hope it passes and gets over the counter approval so I can contribute to humanity and leave a legacy in the same capacity as my long gone but not ever to be forgotten relative Marie Curie. Um, do you think Pfizer or Merck would pick it up and I could get rich and lay in bed with a laptop and Blackberry the rest of my life tweeting, facebooking, linking and blogging???

I did not facebook him while I was driving! Why do you think like that? I chewed my lip for the other 3 minutes until I got home and then I sent him a message  (yes before I went potty… you’re so nosy sometimes) letting him know I  understand how scary this threat of withdrawal is and asking if he wanted to have a conversation about it from an HR and employer perspective.

He did… he facebooked me back (you know as well as I do that facebook is a noun as well as a verb) and asked if I could come over to chat with him and Mike on Monday night about it.

It might be too late for @Shoefeen, and she’s not in the right DMA anyway, but I am excited at the prospect of making an impact on #NEPA SM addicts so they don’t make the same mistake.

Warning: Do not try to be slick and steal my creative terminology. I grant you permission to use it but I demand credit for the stuff I invent, google, and if it doesn’t exist throw on a ™.

Totally agree to the career suicide bit — from persoanl experience of a now x colleague who forgot that golden rule. I read once we have 50,000 thoughts a day (yeah right, who counted them?). But anyway, the trick is not to find the right way to get them out, it’s to make sure they’ve edited. Some people think the point is that it’s the real them coming out, that expression for expressions’s sake is what’s it’s about. It might be, and sometimes that’s a joy to behold, but sometimes its like reading back that poem you wrote in 86 and thinking, was that me, did i really think — no, worse, write that? Thank God I didn’t send it! Only now you can’t so easily take it back.

Hey, came across this on a Google alert for ‘human capital’ and writing from MK UK watching athletics and climbing out of a stinking head. This is exactly what I argued with a colleague working in the human capital space (she works for http://www.hpa-group.com who I consult for, though my game is about turning education on its head). She blogged about how much time was being lost to business. I argued that people used to spend just as much time gossiping around the coffee stand; that taking these things away just hardly makes them more likely to be productive; and, well, if you have to, why not ask those that are good at it to now and then use the company accounts and spread some ideas. It worked: http://www.hpa-group.com/blog/14-human-capital/…

Agreed. A rose is a rose by any other name. So is a water cooler. Additionally, I would like to think I am not the only one using SM to reach out to my posse when I need a little assistance. Between LinkedIn, facebook and Twitter, I believe I have an incredible wealth of knowledge and resources at the click of my mouse. So, besides the benefits of a quick break now and then, the ability to cull reputable information instantaneously is a huge benefit. The key here is to not be abusive of an employer’s time if you are surfing for personal entertainment and not to post things that could (and probably will if discovered) career suicide notes in the eternal cyberspace. ~Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
